Is The Bum Gun For Every Tom, Dick or Harry?

What a fantastic Christmas Day it is…

And with Christmas the fantastic movie “The Great Escape” of course…

It’s one of my favourite movies.

Around this time of year they always stick it on TV – what could be more Christmasy than a Nazi prisoner of war camp?

Just for those of you who don’t know The Great Escape movie (and I can’t believe anyone doesn’t know this film. Heck I’ve watched it even more times than Chitty Bang Bang or even Wizard of Oz)…

The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II.

At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes.

Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels (Tom, Dick and Harry).

I love the fact there were so many fantastic movie stars in this movie, but they all played very different roles…

Including Richard Attenborough, James Garner, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Gordon Jackson, David McCallum, Donald Pleasence, and of course the heroic, fearless, cheeky Steve McQueen.

One of my favourite parts (there are many) is where Captain Virgil Hilts tries to dig himself under the wire like a little mole, only to fail miserably yet again.

But the whole film is full of amazing scenes with brilliant acting and awesome natural landscape scenes once they get out…

I had the theme tune on one of my first mobile phones back in the day…

It gave me the motivation and inspiration to finally do something about the nasty toilet paper problem that I was facing, and knew other people were too…

And if you pay close attention to the movie there are some powerful life lessons for you to learn.

They never quit (even when some of the tunnels collapsed).

They didn’t try to be experts at everything (each person in the escape team had a specialist role to fulfil).

And forward-planning brought success in the end…
