Can Urine Color Explain Your Health?

Feb 10, 2016 | Common Health Questions

So can the color of your urine actually explain your current status of your health? Much like the consistency of your poo-poo telling a doctor all sorts of things (that’s why they test your urine for certain medical conditions), urine can tell a host of secrets about you.

Have you ever wondered why your urine changes color? Have you ever noticed different colors of your pee-pee depending on your lifestyle at a certain time?

Why Does My Pee Change Color When I’m On Coke?

People seem to have all sorts of urinating difficulties when using types of stimulants like cocaine. It’s not only that their pee changes color but they often feel like they constantly need to pee. I suspect the reason they often feel like peeing is that their kidneys are trying to flush their system. Their body is trying to expel all the toxins as quickly as possible. And the dark orange pee will come from not drinking enough fluids when they are high.

What Colors Can Urine Come In?

There are all sorts of colors of urine. And while I’m not a doctor, I would say that the different colors of pee are not a sign of being healthy. It’s basic common sense, and observation. When you are supremely fit and healthy and chugging down liters of water every day, your urine is pretty much the same color as water.

However, if you’ve been sick, and you’ve been necking a ton of pills, your pee is usually very dark orange. Don’t say you haven’t noticed.

Just based on this assessment, you can work out that it is best to have clear looking pee. And whenever you pee is dark yellow or orange, it could well be a sign, you are not drinking enough water.

What If My Pee Turns Red?

Sometimes red urine will tell you that you have a kidney disease or a urinary tract infection. This is when I would advise to go see your doctor as soon as you can.

However, other possible reasons for a red pee-pee could be that you just ate some food that contained a certain pigment. When you eat a lot of beetroot this can lead to ‘beeturia’—the passing of red or pink urine because of a compound called betanin in the vegetable.

When Should I Visit My Doctor?

I think it would be a good idea if you contact your doctor in the following cases:

  • Visible blood in your urine.Bloody urine is common in urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Both of these problems usually cause pain. Painless bleeding may signal a more serious problem, such as cancer.
  • Dark or orange urine. If your urine is dark or orange — particularly if you also have pale stools and yellow skin and eyes — your liver might be malfunctioning.

The Cleveland Clinic  made this infographic below as a guide to the color of your urine. Remember, if you are ever concerned about the color of your urine, don’t be embarrassed. Contact your doctor. It is better for them to say it’s a false alarm, than there being a real problem which should have been looked at sooner.

what-color-say-about-your-healthNote: The infographic says there is no such thing as purple urine. But the Mayo Clinic disagrees. It says that “Deep red to brown urine is an identifying characteristic of porphyria, a rare, inherited disorder of red blood cells.”

I think it is a smart benchmark to remember that the color of your urine won’t always be the same. But you should be aiming for clear to light yellow. So whenever your urine becomes darker, it could well be a clear warning sign that you are not drinking enough water.

So make sure you’re drinking enough aqua libre and i’ll see you tomorrow,
